Surface of the Deep publications are dedicated to taking a deeper dive into the things of God.

THE BIBLE

Surface of the Deep endeavors to ground its theological pursuits in the Bible.
People can approach Scripture in many different ways– Bible study, personal devotion, sermon preparation, critical analysis, literary intrigue, or recreational reading. All are valid and worthy pursuits of Scripture. However, there are sometimes not-so-obvious nuances in the biblical text that only purposeful, intentional study can uncover. A primary aim of Surface of the Deep is to spotlight those nuances, and present them in an understandable and engaging way.

THINKING GOD’S THOUGHTS

Doing theology is not just for the degreed theologian. In all walks of life, there is much to contemplate with regards to the glory of God. Referencing his work in astronomy, Johannes Kepler said,

“I was merely thinking God’s thoughts after Him. Since we astronomers are priests of the highest God in regard to the book of nature, it benefits us to be thoughtful, not of the glory of our minds, but rather, above all else, of the glory of God.”

When we seek to more deeply explore the things of God in Scripture and in Creation, we fulfill our call to bring Him glory.

DOING THEOLOGY

Theology is the study of the things of God.
Doing theology is a purposeful endeavor to study and think through the things of God intensely, with a view towards:
– understanding and knowing God better– His nature, His actions, and His relationship to humanity
– interpreting Scriptures correctly
– providing for needful evaluation and criticism of theological positions in both the church and the world
– offering foundations for a godly worldview and applications that affect an individual’s relationship with God, family, friends, acquaintances, and society at large.

Surface of the Deep is dedicated to pursuing all of these, with the ultimate goal of bringing God glory.

“Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Cor 10:31)
